A BIG WELCOME FROM VANCOUVER BC...
the California of Canada
(I actually live in Delta, a suburb of Vancouver)
This Site is More of a big personal blog of technical
stuff etc. than a website.
New stuff is usually posted at the bottom of
the page...
TO FIND INFO ON THIS PAGE, SIMPLY USE SEARCH
IN YOUR BROWSER...
(it's what I do)
QUICK INTRODUCTION...
Purpose of this site...
Put simply, I have two fundamental passions,
1. Helping people
2. All forms of current and
past technology
(I've found, the best way to
learn about the future is to understand the past)
My personal interests include...
ALL forms of WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY
(probably a good thing I work for Rogers
Wireless LOL)
Audio including vintage & new
along with Vinyl
Video / Photography / Computers
Ham Radio
in other words, anything with a plug on the end of it or a battery inside of
it.
This site is a repository of things I am
interested in and hopefully I can help others by sharing some of things I have learned,
I think it's in the DeMara / Leckie blood in
me, to want to help others
Feel free to
request to join my Facebook page as well. I post a lot articles on neat technology stuff.
www.facebook.com/pauldemara
So if I work with bleeding edge
wireless technology all day, guess what I do at night.
Go home and play with all kinds of vintage, current and bleeding edge technology.
LOL
In many cases technology that I
simply couldn't afford
when I was in my 20's, and 30's.
A lot of my focus over the last few years
has been Vintage Audio gear and the science of good sound.
I've been testing and trying all kinds of
different audio gear and technology to find out why certain types of audio
technology sounds so much better than other technology.
So far I've tested and evaluated, open Reel
to Reel, tape 8 track, Cassette, DCC or Digital Compact Cassette, DAT or
Digital Audio Tape, CD's, SACD's, DVD Audio.
The bottom line. YOU SIMPLY CAN'T BEAT
VINYL. it's truly a magical format that fosters an emotional response when you
listen. Maybe that's why it's making a comeback.
Kind of ironic because Ted Roger's, the late
founder of the company I work for believed the future was in FM Radio in the
early 60's because of it's superior sound quality.
I can certainly relate to the importance of
excellent sound quality.
I guess I truly am addicted to
learning about technology, sharing it with others and applying this knowledge to what I do every day.
And you know, I wouldn't have it any other
way...

FAMILY HISTORY CORNER...

The DeMara Family Crest
Pics of
DeMara & Sons Insurance,
Started by my Great Grandfather in 1923 in Kelowna...
Located across from the Willow Inn Hotel which my
Grandmother built.

Portrait shot of My Dad Monty Philip DeMara
April 1st 1932 - Nov 16, 1982

My Dad, Monty DeMara in the center of this picture, in front New
Office of DeMara and Son's
Insurance, Kelowna B.C.
Also two of my Dad's friends. Circa early 70's.
Very Cool - sent to me from Doug Irvine
A great article on my Dad's and his life and his contributions.
http://memorybc.ca/demara-monty;isaar
My Dad really believed in giving back to the community and was
very active in the Kinsmen Club in Kelowna and the Kelowna Museum.
(We both shared a love for the past)
He was their Deputy Governor for the Kinsmen in 1967 and
1968.
http://ww.kelownakinsmen.com/accomplishments.htm
Their motto is "Serving the Community's Greatest Need"
MORE FAMILY HISTORY & HERITAGE HOMES IN

A BIT MORE DEMARA / LECKIE FAMILY HISTORY...
DAVID LECKIE... (My Great Grandfather)

Portrait of David Leckie, my great-grandfather,
who left Edinburgh for Canada at the age of 16.
Photo courtesy of Kelowna Museum Archives.
A neat article and photo of David Leckie's home
in Kelowna. (built in 1906)
http://www.historicplaces.ca/fr/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=7145

BELOW... A photo of David Leckie Hardware in
the early 1900's.
The business was sold to the late WAC Bennett
the 25th premier of our Province.
It was renamed Bennett's Hardware after the
sale
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._A._C._Bennett
David Leckie and WAC Bennett were good friends.
My dad went to school with Bill Bennett, WAC
Bennett''s son, He was our 27th Premier of the BC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Bennett
Bill Bennett was a 3rd cousin, twice removed, of R.B.
Bennett, eleventh Prime Minister of Canada.
Monty DeMara my dad was born April 1st,
1932 and Bill Bennett was born August 18th 1932.
I guess they were good friends because Bill
Bennett attended my Dad's funeral in Kelowna.
Kelowna sure was VERY small town back in the
30's and 40's.
Below, Leckie Hardware on Bernard Street

Kind of cool to have Kelowna streets named
after him right in the heart of the commercial district of Kelowna. (Leckie
Road, Leckie Place)
If you've been to Kelowna then you've driven
past Leckie Road as it intersects Hwy 97 the main highway through town.
http://g.co/maps/a497k

I only became aware of our family's significant
contribution to Kelowna's early economic growth after listening to the eulogies
at my dad's funeral in 1982.
It sure was a humbling experience to find out
what our family had done to help develop Kelowna's early economy.
(I guess when your are young, you don't really
see the big picture...)

MEDIA
CORNER...

BC Hydro did a terrific story on my whole house LED re-lamp project.
VERY COOL !!!
I really wanted to get the GREEN message out there as I think
it's super important for people to know about this IMPORTANT new technology.
Maybe if everyone in BC converted to LED bulbs we might not have to flood
another valley and build another dam.
http://www.bchydro.com/news/conservation/2012/house-full-of-LEDs.html
And, YES you CAN convert you entire house to LED light bulbs...
ROI should be 3 to 4 years.
The best part is I DON'T have to change any more light bulbs for
another 25 years or longer. :-)

MY VINTAGE AUDIO EQUIPMENT...
For those of you who are curious as to what audio gear I run,
(Everyone seems to ask for advice on this)
Forget about brands and specifications...
If you like your sound and feel an emotional buzz when you
listen then you've arrived.
I'm a big Jazz fan, so when I close my eyes I want to feel
Miles or Diana standing in front of me...
I'm also a big Marantz fan. Their stuff just works for me...

DAC DISCOVERY...JULY 2011
DIGITAL can in fact, sound REALLY GOOD !!!
RECENT DAC DISCOVERY.. (Yes VINYL is still better)
Have to thank my buddy Steve W for some new knowledge on
the Philips TDA-1541 DAC
As well, my bud Gord from Innovative Audio also encouraged
me to take the plunge into a stand along DAC...
Turns out the AMAZING Philips TDA 1541 ladder type 16 bit DAC has a HUGE
audiophile fan bas out there.
The Lampizator in Europe really brought all this to my attention.
http://lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/TDA1541%20corner/TDA1541.html
So now own what I consider to be one of the ultimate DAC's ever built.
The Sony DAS-R1 and CDP-R1combo, circa 1986
http://www.sony.net/Fun/design/history/product/1980/cdp-r1.html

The DAS-R1 and CDP-R1 sold for $8,000 US in 1986 ($10,000 cdn)
You know that Sony used a Philips TDA-1541 S1 in the DAS-R1 statement piece, not
their own DAC chips.
hmmmm wonder why that would be...
The renowned Ken Ishiwata also redesigned the Marantz CD10, 11, 16 from a one
bit DAC 7 to a 16 bit TDA-1541.
http://kipearl.marantz.eu/
http://marantz.co.uk/uk/AboutUs/Pages/KenIshiwata.aspx
So why would you care?
Well if you love the emotion of music like I do you need
to audition one of the CD players listed below.
They all are running TDA-1541 DAC's (chart courtesy of Lampizator web site)
I would even suggest an audition CD players with the older first gen Philips
TDA-1540 like the Marantz CD-73 and others.
My guess is post audition, you will realize what you've been missing and might
even play a few less vinyl records.
MUSIC is all about Stirring YOUR EMOTIONS and the TDA-1541 DAC seems to do that
in spades

Just picked this pair up (Jan 2011)
The VERY RARE...
Marantz Esotec SC-9 Control amp
Marantz Esotec SM-6 Power Amp
(30 watts Class A or 120 watts Class A/B)
Circa 1981 ish.
Some of the best non tube gear that Marantz ever produced.
The build quality is second to non and the sound is as smooth and
transparent as it gets. (Very much, tube like)
Audio Nervana... I would say so.
Not only do they sound amazing, but they look amazing...
The Champagne Gold finish is just stunning to look at.
Now I just have to find the Marantz Esotec SC-8 Tuner and SD 7
cassette deck. That might take a while... LOL
These pieces are in VERY HIGH demand by Marantz fans.

My 2003 YAMAHA RX-Z1 FLAGSHIP RECEIVER in CHAMPAGNE/GOLD (EXTREMELY
RARE)
Uses the stunning Burr Brown PCM1704 DAC's. Very impressive
receiver. Weighs in at over 70 lbs. Super simple to operate and actually has a
simple to get to STEREO mode with REAL, not menu driven bass and treble
controls . When in Stereo mode the bass can be sent to the sub output. In other
words this receiver is the best of both worlds. Stereo and Multi-channel. The
two biggest got-cha's are a fixed 80 Hz turnover for the sub out and no HDMI
jacks. I prefer component anyway as this type of video connection completely
eliminates dialogue time alignment / lip sync issues when watching high
def content. The RX-Z1 isn't perfect but it's pretty darn close in my mind.
I had to take a picture of my Champagne RX-Z1 because you CAN'T find a
picture of one of these on the internet in champagne / gold. I am lucky enough
to have two of these. One in champagne and one in Black.
Link to the Burr Brown 1704 DAC press release...

THE RX-Z1 has TONS of connections on the back. This is where I
like to play...Note the large number digital audio connections and 3 100 MHz
component video jacks as well as dual room support.

You can hook up the kitchen sink to this bad boy...
A good review on the Yamaha RX-Z1
http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/receivers/yamaha-rx-z1

How things look in the stand.
Had to move the RX-Z1 to the middle of the stand because it's
just over 70
LBS and was actually bending the glass.
YIKES... (Total weight of all equipment is over 350 LBS)

Equipment like this makes
CD's sound like a transistor radio.
Well it's not that CD's are
that bad.
Just that LPs do sound a
whole lot better.
Some interesting reading from
TNT

MY COMMENTS ON RECORDS / LP's
I have just recently re-found how wonderful analogue LP's sound.
I still have lots of CD's, SACD's, DVD Audio and DTS CD discs but the LP's sound amazing to me
and there is SO much more software out there in the form of LP's vs. SACD,
DVD DTS CD audio discs. I am also collecting SQ, QS and CD-4 (channel discrete) 4 channel quad
records as well. Again amazing warm smooth sound.
Yup Vinyl is back. Actually it never left. We all just got caught
up in the CD / MP3 Hype.
Even my Son who is 21 says "wow dad that really sounds
good compared to my MP3's"
EXACTLY...
PLEASE don't throw those old albums out.
Find a new home for them, better yet get that turntable out and fire it up. Even
a modest turntable can sound amazing. You may want to invest in a new cartridge
as this can really make a difference. Cartridge technology has really improved
over the last 20 years. E.g. a new Grado Blue or Green cartridge can be had for
around $50.00 and it will BLOW you away with what it can do. The Silver and Gold
Grado's are even more amazing.

My Downstairs System
Everything except the
Paradigm Studio 20 V3 Reference 60 speakers is ~20 years old..
You can't buy stuff like
this today.
All this equipment sounds
STUNNING

How important is resolution?
Not as important as you might think. According to the Imaging Science
Foundation, a group that consults for home-theater manufacturers and trains
professional video calibrators, the most important aspect of picture quality is
contrast
ratio, the second most important is
color
saturation, and the third is color accuracy. Resolution comes in a distant
fourth, despite being easily the most-talked-about HDTV spec today.

SWAP MEET REVIEW.
I attended the first annual vintage swap meet on July the 12, 2008 at the South
Delta Rec Centre at 1720 56th Street. This was an amazing event. Lots of great
stuff for sale. I picked up an Oracle Delphi Mark 1 turntable and a Sony
CDP-779ES CD player. Very cool. Am a bit poorer now.. LOL. See above for
pictures of some of my new gear. Gord's vision of a local Vintage swap meet was
really well received. The attendance was awesome and I had a chance to meet some
fellow audiophiles like myself.
As well there was great auction with lots of very interesting pieces. I picked
up a JVC receiver with a CD-4 decoder. Very cool.
All in all a totally awesome day and can't wait for next years event. Many
thanks to Gord and Sue for their dedication and effort to put this together. We
all owe them a ton of gratitude.
best regards,
Paul DeMara

OFFICIAL AM STEREO SITE

AM Stereo Definition on Wikipedia
OFFICIAL AM
STEREO PAGE
Today's AM Stereo
However, Motorola didn't just stay put because their system had "won" and was
the standard. They listened to the complaints and worked to reduce or eliminate
most of the past problems with the C-Quam system. By the early 1990s, they
introduced new circuit designs which offered better audio fidelity and featured
methods which greatly reduced the occurence of "platform motion".
Unfortunately, since then, people haven't paid much attention to AM Stereo.
In fact, many people think it doesn't even exist anymore. But it does exist, and
it is used by hundreds of stations all around the world. And thousands of AM
Stereo radios continue to be manufactured and sold every year. AM Stereo even
remains competitive against experimental digital AM broadcasting systems, such
as iBiquity's "HD Radio", which are plagued with problems and will actually
reduce the sound quality that AM radio has to offer.

The Year Ahead in HDTV: faster, thinner, cheaper
An exclusive report from the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) by
PCWorld.ca correspondent, Ted Kritsonis
2007 Coolest Gadgets
The end of the year provides us with the perfect excuse to look back at some
of the coolest gadgets of 2007. As you might expect, the continuing convergence
of all sorts of products into smaller and more functional devices was a big
theme in 2007. Some of the gadgets also reminded us of the importance of
services that often go hand-in-hand with hardware and are a big but often
forgotten part of the "cool factor" we attach to such products. Read more.
The Year in Tech: Top 2007 News and Trends
Legal tussles, format wars, and (of course) the iPhone dominated technology
news in 2007. The iPhone may have made the biggest tech splash in 2007, but a
lot of other cannonballs hit the water as well: The year saw the hatching of
Google's Android, a number of exploding laptops, and even a new tech-related
ailment called "Acute Wiiitis."Here are the biggest tech headlines of the
year--including some we'd like to forget.

BLU-RAY vs HD DVD
A great article about this new Hi-Def format. My only comment is nice but not
really needed unless you go really big.
As per the articles comments 37 inch (maybe 42 inch) sets and smaller do not
benefit much from the extra resolution.
On the bigger than 42 inch sets it is noticeable but only if you are really
close. The further away you are from the set the less you will notice the extra
resolution.

HD-DVD VS Blu-Ray
Well basically they both produce an awesome picture. NICE !!!!
No question about the fact that. Really is that Blu-Ray has a bit more storage
space and it looks like a bit bigger following.
So who will win? It really looks like the momentum is swinging towards Blu-Ray

Marketing 101 - The great cable rip off.
As many of you know, being technical has advantages.
I get to read marking info and poke fun at the people trying to get you to spend
money on stuff that doesn't matter.
Case in point. Cables, specifically HDMI cables.
The signal is digital
As long as it arrives intact NO price you pay will make any difference on the
picture quality.
It saddens me when I see people being LIED to in consumer electronic stores
about needing expensive cables.
Simply put - Don't waist your money on expensive cables.
Buy some really nice speakers instead, that YOU like the sound of.
A great article backing up my thoughts..
http://reviews.cnet.com/hdmi-guide/?tag=nl.e702
Excerpt from article...
Expensive cables aren't worth it
If you walk into your typical
electronics store to buy an HDMI
cable, you're likely to see prices
upward of $50 with promises of
better performance and faster
speeds. Do you really need to spend
that much money on a single HDMI
cable?
Absolutely
not--those cables are a rip-off.
You should never pay more than $10
for a standard six-foot HDMI cable.
And despite what salesmen and
manufacturers might tell you,
there's no meaningful difference
between the $10 cable and the $50
cable. Unless you see something
obvious, such as dropouts or a
flashing screen, the digital
information transmitted by both
cables is exactly the same--no cable
can make the picture any better or
any worse. We've used cables from
many different companies in the
past--such as Belkin, Accell,
Monoprice, Monster, and SimplayHD--and
have not run into any consistent
issues with any brand of cable. With
working cables and solid
connections, we've seen no dropouts
and "sparklies"--just consistent,
dependable, high-quality audio and
video. It's that simple.

HDMI vs Component Video
Digital may not always be the best solution
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&manufacturer=25
From this article
When testing the S2500,
I noticed a pretty significant difference between the HDMI output and the
component outputs. Obviously one of the main draws to this player would be
the HDMI output which offers scaled resolutions of 720p and 1080i, as well
as a direct digital video path. This is definitely the preferred delivery
system to a digital display as it alleviates the need for transitions from
digital to analog and back, along with the filtering involved in the
process.
The only downside here
is that the component outputs are actually better, since they don’t have the
same issues that this player’s HDMI output is exhibiting. The component
outputs also have an array of video adjustments that are not available with
the HDMI output.
On the core side, the
component outputs are just about flawless. The frequency response is rock
solid, and I didn’t notice any artificial ringing in my subjective analysis.
The Ziva 5 chip did fine in our chroma tests, especially since the Faroudja
chip masks any issues associated with it. Pixel cropping was not an issue
via component or HDMI.

JULY 7, 2008
How to Capture Bit accurate PCM streams on Various Sound Cards.
http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-56795.html
So the new idea of the day....
My next project / idea, capture DTS encoded streams at 44.1 and 48 kHz to a
DAT deck.
This technically should allow me to make up DTS 5.1 music mix DAT tape
recording.
If it works this is VERY cool thing to do with an old DAT deck.
STAY TUNED.
THIS COULD BE VERY COOL AND MAKE THAT OLD DAT DECK VERY USEFUL.
cheers,
UPDATE JULY 9 2008.
IT WORKS 100% YEE HA...
YOU CAN NOW RECORD 5.1 DTS MUSIC ON A DAT DECK...
I did my first test today using a DTS CD being played back through an optical
cable plugged into my Sony Portable DAT DECK.
I recorded the DTS bit stream onto my Sony DCT-D8 portable DAT Deck.
When I played the recording back through the optical output it provided the
DTS signal to my Receivers DTS DECODER.
This is a really amazing breakthrough in home recording as you now can use a
DAT deck to record 5.1 music.
VERY COOL...
P.S. Turns out others have already tried this, but info is hard to find on
the net.
The next test will be to use the Creative DTS-610 to real time encode DTS 5.1
onto the DAT DECK.
keeping my fingers crossed this will also work.
Has some really useful applications.
Some application examples..
1. recording 5.1 SACD / DVD-AUDIO Disks to DAT tape
2. Recording 5.1 audio mixes from Music Videos to DAT
3. Recording 5.1 DTS sound on a DAT deck for various concerts etc.
I am sure there are lots more uses as well
Cheers and stay tuned for more.
I will post videos and pictures as soon as I can.

YES IT CAN BE DONE
5.1 SACD to DTS CD
I use the above box to convert 5.1 SACD's to 5.1 DTS CD's and DTS 5.1 DAT TAPES
The Creative DTS-610 can do 2.0 2.2 (Quad) or 5.1 to DTS with the Creative LABS DTS-610
VERY SIMPLE TO DO
1. Hook up your 5.1 analogue source deck e.g. SACD player or DVD-Audio Player to the
analogue 5.1 input
of the Creative DTS-610
2. Hook the digital output of the DTS-610 to the digital input of either a DAT DECK or
CD RECORDER (Can use Toslink or Coax digital connector depending on input of
equipment)
Hit play on the SACD player and record on the DAT DECK or CD RECORDER and you
are good to go.
You will notice that the display shows a constant -12 dbm. This is normal as you
will not see any variance on the display as the signal is a continuous DTS bit
stream which the recording meter can't read.
Only negative is that the CD Recorder and DAT Deck have to have chapters marked
manually. Easy to do on a DAT deck. Press the track mark button. For CD
recording it's more about using the pause button at the end of each song.
Other thing to note is that some CD recorders will modify the bit stream. If
your CD Recorder unit has a digital volume control like my Yamaha CDR-651 then
this type of DTS recording will NOT work. My JVC XL-R5000 works 100% but I had
to make sure I turned off the sampling rate converter to get the DTS bit stream
to record on it.

For DTS 5.1 Playback.
DAT playback - hook up your Dat deck to your DTS capable receive's digital input
and set the receiver to decode DTS. (some are not automatic at doing this.)
DTS CD playback. - Put the newly made DTS CD in a CD or DVD player with digital
outputs and hook the output into the digital input of your receiver. Select that
input and hit play on the CD or DVD player.
My setup for making DTS 5.1 CD's and DAT Tapes as well as
copies from CD-4 Quad Albums. (discrete 4 channel sound)
I use a Grado Silver cartridge which has a frequency response
of 10 to 60,000 hz for the CD-4 Records.
(yes that's an old JVC Quad receiver that I use to decode CD-4 quad disks to
make DTS 2.2 CD's)

Equipment Used to make DTS 5.1 CD's and DAT Tapes
A - Sony SCD-XE670 SACD player
B - JVC XL-R5000 CD Recorder (turn off sample
rate converter)
C - Sony DTC 60ES DAT Deck (Using this to copy
SACD's in 5.1 DTS)
D - Sony DTC 60ES DAT Deck (back up DAT
Deck)
E - Creative DTS-610 bottom left.

Connecting Your PC to Your Home Theater
Without DTS-610
- Without DTS-610 connecting your PC to
your home theater involves long, messy
cables, cable extenders and the chore of
figuring out how to connect the multitude of
cables to the back of your receiver.
Connecting Your PC to Your Home
Theater With DTS-610
- With DTS-610 connecting your PC to your
home theater is easy, just connect your PC
to DTS-610 with a standard PC speaker cable
and plug the optical cable into your home
theater receiver. All the cables and
everything you need is included in the box.

Watching Movies with External Video
Devices
- Converts OPTICAL SPDIF Output to COAX
SPDIF. Connects Non-COAX equipment with
OPTICAL equipment and vice versa which is
extremely helpful when using legacy devices
with only Coaxial connectors.

Yes you can convert SACD 5.1 to DTS 5.1 and record to the DTS stream to a
DAT Deck or CD Recorder very easily.
I am using a Creative DTS-610 encoder with a Sony SACD player model
SCD-XE670 as a source drive for 5.1 SACD Music. I have hooked up the 5.1
analogue outputs of the SACD player to the input of the Creative DTS-610.
The DTS-610 encodes the 5.1 analogue audio and puts out a 44.1 kHz DTS
stream. This stream can then be recorded on to a Sony DAT (DTC-60ES) deck or
my JVC XL-R5000 CD recorder. It’s fully compliant with either of these
formats as the DTS stream looks like a standard PCM 44.1 Khz stereo stream.
(It just looks like a strero stream but actually has the 5.1 DTS encoded
info on it.)
This also works with my old 70's JVC receiver with a CD-4 Quad decoder which
conveniently has pre outs on it. I use an Oracle Delphi Mark 1 turntable
with a Grado Silver cartridge to feed the JVC receiver. The CD-4 decoder
locks on no problem. (The Grado Silver Cartridge is rated to 60,000+ Hz so
it easily sends thought the 30 kHz pilot tone for CD-4 Decoding. To make a
quad DTS recording, I unhook the Center / Sub input on the DTS-610 and it
then sets up as only 2.2 DTS recording. NICE!!! I can then record Quad CD-4
Records to a DTS CD or a DTS DAT tape. This works extremely well.
No issues with copying 5.1 music. Works great for 5.1 DVD-Audio Disks as
well. I generally rip those directly via the DVD compatibility mode to 5.1
PCM seperate streams and then encode with the sure code DTS encoder to make
DTS 5.1 CD’s. Once I have the DTS CD, I can also copy to DAT to make a 5.1
mix tape. Am listening to one right now.
Feel free to visit my site for additional details and pictures. Still got
lots to post as I have just started doing this about a month and half ago.
Sounds like others are on the same page based on what I have read on this
thread. Am also interested in buying an additional DTS-610 unit if anyone
knows where to get one.
best regards,
Paul DeMara

SACD / DSD - DIRECT STREAM DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
The BETTER way to record in digital.
http://www.canadapromedia.com/Articles/sacd/sacd.htm

SACD Pulse Train
The
resulting pulse trains "looks" remarkably like the audio waveform that it
represents. Furthermore digital to analog conversion can be as simple as running
the pulse train through an analog low pass filter!
Sony and
Philips designed DSD to capture the complete information of today's best analog
systems. The best 30ips half-inch analog recorders can capture frequencies past
50 kHz. DSD can represent this with a frequency response from DC to 100 kHz. To
cover the dynamic range of a good analog mixing console, the residual noise
power was held at -120 dB through the audio band. This combination of frequency
response and dynamic range is unmatched by any other recording system, digital
or analog

HI-FI for your IPOD...

http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/2423/v/1/?source=weeklyemail&attr=editorial1
VERY IMPORTANT TO GET THE BEST QUALITY FROM YOUR IPOD...
A curious quirk of iTunes is Apple's
failure to understand the importance of
error correction when ripping CDs to the
media player. It also defaults to
128kbps AAC (Advanced Audio Coding… a
sort of SuperMP3) as standard. Neither
of these settings are acceptable for
hi-fi grade listening. Instead, go to
the Preferences drop-down menu, and
click the Import Settings button on the
General box that appears.
Now change the 'Import Using' setting
from 'AAC Encoder' to either 'Apple
Lossless Encoder' or 'AIFF Encoder' (we
prefer AIFF to WAV, because AIFF
includes all the metadata about a track
as standard). You can adjust the AIFF
Encoder (using the 'custom' button
directly below) to look specifically for
44.1kHz sampling, 16-bit precision
recordings on CD, but 'auto' works well
enough. Now beneath these two options is
an unchecked box marked 'Use error
correction when reading Audio CDs'. Turn
this on.

DEC 23, 2008 NETBOOK TECHNOLOGY...
(A net book has no DVD or CD ROM drive)
(The next wave for laptops - maybe)
So I just bought a new LG X110 Net book with
Windows XP. (Same as the MSI Wind) Lets just say this is a really cool simple
technology that lots of folks are going to want to get into. It all started with
the Asus Eee PC and well there's money to be made in this space as so everyone
is jumping on board.
For the small sum of $450.00 cdn dollars at
Future Shop you get a super small laptop running XP home with 1 gig of ram and a
1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor with hyper-threading. (much better for battery life
than dual core chip) and a nice big 160 gig SATA 2.5 inch hard drive along with
3 fast USB 2 ports and external VGA adapter.
Remember the Sony Picture books etc from 2001
- 2004. All these micro laptops were really early net books but with a really
high price tag. That's all changed now with the introduction of the latest Net
book hardware.
First off running XP home on this little guy
with 1 gig of ram on the 1.6 GHz Atom hyper threading processor SCREAMS with
speed vs. what you would get with VISTA. Yes Vista is pretty looking and
has a few nice features but XP is fast, stable and easy to use plus all
the drivers are out there. Again this is not a gaming machine but for text based
activates like web surfing, word excel, power point, basic photo work. playing
video's it works awesome. I even loaded up my sling player on it and it's just
perfect from a playback performance point of view. Again for me it's all
about the common use apps not the specialty stuff like editing high def video or
playing the latest 3D game.
I'll take fast and
stable vs. Slow and pretty any day.
I chose the LG X110
Net book for some very specific reasons...
1. Reasonable sized
keyboard. (for instance look how cramped the Toshiba keyboard is)
2. Built in Bluetooth
2.0 EDR (enhanced data rate)
3. XP Home (not
really into Linux)
4. 10 inch LED back
light display that you can read in direct sunlight
5. 160 Gig Hard Drive
6. Separate Audio in
and out jacks
7. Hardware control
of WiFi / Volume etc on keyboard
8. Built in SD reader
with SDHC support
9. Screen scalability
- I set mine for large fonts, turn off all the animation, and set the display to
800 X 600 which is good for me as I have BAD eyes.
10. Great 1.3 mega
pixel web cam with reasonable light sensitivity. Surprisingly good performance
from the built in Webcam.
AREAS FOR
IMPROVEMENT...
1. Slot for 3G
internal modem (the spot is there but LG removed the header to save money on
this North American version)
2. Bigger Battery.
The 3 cell 2200 MAH battery is good for 2 hours ish but a 6 cell battery is
probably a good idea. (not really something LG is likely to include as it adds
to the weight of the unit.)
3. Sound is ok but LG
needs to implement some wave guide technology to improve the low end frequency
response. Based on what I have seen inside the unit they could put a small set
of wave guides in the unit without changing the size .

720P vs 1080P
In my opinion there just isn't a whole lot of difference between 720P and
1080P on 50 inch and smaller sets. Heck even my 55 inch Hitachi pro set looks
SPECTACULAR in 720P.
An article to backup my thinking...
(yes the marketing folks want you to buy a 1080P set but you really DON'T
need it to enjoy HD)
http://reviews.cnet.com/4321-6482_7-6558982-1.html?tag=nl.e702
If you're shopping at the low-end, it pays to remember our
oft-repeated rule
that even at the relatively large 50-inch screen size, it's tough to tell the
difference between 1080p and lower resolution 720p models. That said, the
best-performing plasmas we've reviewed all have 1080p resolution, but the
reasons have little to do with pixel count. Check out the individual reviews for
details.

Push to Talk on Your Blackberry
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blackberrycool/mYUU/~3/504398330/
Subject: HipVoice bringing cross carrier push-to-talk to BlackBerry for
$10/month. Wow.
I feel bad for all those poor souls that have locked themselves into
Sprint/Nextel for push-to-talk functionality, only to wait an average of three
years for new iDEN BlackBerrys. HipVoice is a cross carrier push-to-talk service
that will soon be launching for BlackBerry. As the video shows above, not only
does it work irrespective of your BlackBerry or carrier, subscribers will also
be able to communicate with WinMo and Symbian devices (iPhone coming soon). Here
are the different ways HipVoice can be used. UNICAST: Push-To-Talk one to one
MULTICAST: Push-To-Talk one to many (Also to Walkie Talkies)
CHANNEL: Push-To-Talk to anyone subscribed to the channel
RICH MESSAGING: Text message users that are on or off-line
HipVoice is looking to charge $10/month for the service. Honestly, I'm not sure

Worthwhile Canadian Initiative
Canadian banks are typically
leveraged at 18 to 1--compared with U.S. banks at 26 to 1.European
banks at a frightening 61 to 1.....
Fareed Zakaria
NEWSWEEK
From the magazine issue dated Feb 16, 2009
The legendary editor of The New Republic, Michael Kinsley, once held a
"Boring Headline Contest" and decided that the winner was "Worthwhile
Canadian Initiative." Twenty-two years later, the magazine was rescued from
its economic troubles by a Canadian media company, which should have taught
us Americans to be a bit more humble. Now there is even more striking
evidence of Canada's virtues. Guess which country, alone in the
industrialized world, has not faced a single bank failure, calls for
bailouts or government intervention in the financial or mortgage sectors.
Yup, it's Canada. In 2008, the World Economic Forum ranked Canada's banking
system the healthiest in the world. America's ranked 40th, Britain's 44th.
Canada has done more than survive this financial crisis. The country is
positively thriving in it. Canadian banks are well capitalized and poised to
take advantage of opportunities that American and European banks cannot
seize. The Toronto Dominion Bank, for example, was the 15th-largest bank in
North America one year ago. Now it is the fifth-largest. It hasn't grown in
size; the others have all shrunk.
So what accounts for the genius of the Canadians? Common sense. Over the
past 15 years, as the United States and Europe loosened regulations on their
financial industries, the Canadians refused to follow suit, seeing the old
rules as useful shock absorbers. Canadian banks are typically leveraged at
18 to 1-compared with U.S. banks at 26 to 1 and European banks at a
frightening 61 to 1. Partly this reflects Canada's more risk-averse
business culture, but it is also a product of old-fashioned rules on
banking.
Canada has also been shielded from the worst aspects of this crisis because
its housing prices have not fluctuated as wildly as those in the United
States. Home prices are down 25 percent in the United States, but only half
as much in Canada. Why? Well, the Canadian tax code does not provide the
massive incentive for overconsumption that the U.S. code does: interest on
your mortgage isn't deductible up north. In addition, home loans in the
United States are "non-recourse," which basically means that if you go belly
up on a bad mortgage, it's mostly the bank's problem. In Canada, it's yours.
Ah, but you've heard American politicians wax eloquent on the need for these
expensive programs-interest deductibility alone costs the federal government
$100 billion a year-because they allow the average Joe to fulfill the
American Dream of owning a home. Sixty-eight percent of Americans own their
own homes. And the rate of Canadian homeownership? It's 68.4 percent. Canada
has been remarkably responsible over the past decade or so. It has had 12
years of budget surpluses, and can now spend money to fuel a recovery from a
strong position. The government has restructured the national pension
system, placing it on a firm fiscal footing, unlike our own insolvent Social
Security. Its health-care system is cheaper than America's by far
(accounting for 9.7 percent of GDP, versus 15.2 percent here), and yet does
better on all major indexes. Life expectancy in Canada is 81 years, versus
78 in the United States; "healthy life expectancy" is 72 years, versus 69.
American car companies have moved so many jobs to Canada to take advantage
of lower health-care costs that since 2004, Ontario and not Michigan has
been North America's largest car-producing region. I could go on. The U.S.
currently has a brain-dead immigration system. We issue a small number of
work visas and green cards, turning away from our shores thousands of
talented students who want to stay and work here. Canada, by contrast, has
no limit on the number of skilled migrants who can move to the country. They
can apply on their own for a Canadian Skilled Worker Visa, which allows them
to become perfectly legal "permanent residents" in Canada-no need for a
sponsoring employer, or even a job. Visas are awarded based on education
level, work experience, age and language abilities. If a prospective
immigrant earns 67 points out of 100 total (holding a Ph.D. is worth 25
points, for instance), he or she can become a full-time, legal resident of
Canada. Companies are noticing. In 2007 Microsoft, frustrated by its
inability to hire foreign graduate students in the United States, decided to
open a research center in Vancouver. The company's announcement noted that
it would staff the center with "highly skilled people affected by
immigration issues in the U.S." So the brightest Chinese and Indian software
engineers are attracted to the United States, trained by American
universities, then thrown out of the country and picked up by Canada-where
most of them will work, innovate and pay taxes for the rest of their lives.
If President Obama is looking for smart government, there is much he, and
all of us, could learn from our quiet-OK, sometimes boring-neighbor to the
north. Meanwhile, in the councils of the financial world, Canada is pushing
for new rules for financial institutions that would reflect its approach.
This strikes me as, well, a worthwhile Canadian initiative. URL:

Serious HIGH END Luxman Equipment. (Mortgage not included)
http://www.onahighernote.com/
A Quote from their site which I FULLY agree with.
Easy On the Ear
A piece of audio equipment should offer excellent performance specifications.
Yet, the product that performs the best on paper is not necessarily the best
sounding one - because there is no way to relate specifications to the degree of
emotion a product evokes in the heart of the listener.
While LUXMAN place a great importance on numerical analysis of our products,
still greater significance is given to actual auditions.
In essence, our performance concept is to ensure that a component produces
the most natural sound possible when it plays back music.
Our senses are quick to detect unnaturalness in what we hear.
Artificial sound tires us, but rich, natural sound relaxes and frees us from
stress and tension, letting us enjoys music at the deepest level.

My third generation iPod will soon celebrate its 5th birthday, which
ought to qualify it for an old age pension in the electronics world. I
keep casting a lustful eye at Apple's newest offerings, but the truth is
that my scratched and abused old player still does everything it should.
Its biggest downfalls are a lack of storage space - a cramped 15 GB
Toshiba hard drive - and increasingly poor battery life.
I looked into the price of replacement drives, but they're expensive and
require me to replace the metal back with a deeper one. It makes more
sense to jump into the futuristic world of flash memory. DealExtreme
sells a nifty
$4.95 Compact Flash adapter that lets you replace the standard 1.8"
Toshiba drive with a CF card ranging up to 32 GB (around $60). That fits
the bill for me.

Comments on why CD's don't sound that great compared to SACD or
Analogue Recordings.
The Future of Sound:
SACD
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
April 24, 2001
by Edward Jay Epstein
Mark Levinson, the archguru of ultra hi-fi musical
reproduction, has stopped recording music on conventional CDs. He no longer even
listens to them. And, while his name still is burnished on some of the world's
most expensive CD players -- the Mark Levinson Reference CD Player, for example
-- by a company which bought his brand, and name, years ago, he discourages
clients at his own company, Red Rose Music, from buying conventional CD gear.
Instead, he records all his music in the new Super Audio CD format (SACD) and
recommends to his customers that, if they want digital music, they buy SACD
players.
SACD, which was recently launched in America by Sony and
Philips, the same partnership that, a quarter century earlier, developed and
patented the CD, is identical to the CD in its dimensions and appearance but has
a different and far superior way of encoding and decoding digital sound.
Mr. Levinson explains that this change is crucial to the
future of digital sound. "SACD addresses what has become an international
epidemic: PCM." PCM, which stands for Pulse Code Modulation, is the operating
system used for all digital sound -- CDs, movies, television, DVDs, computers,
etc. -- with the exception of SACDs. Mr. Levinson's concern about PCM goes
beyond the quality of the music it reproduces. He believes that PCM induces
toxic stress in listeners.
The Sony executives responsible for marketing this new
format do not share Mr. Levinson's view about the toxicity of PCM. But they
acknowledged that there were sonic problems with PCM, which had resulted in
reports of "listening fatigue," as David Kawakami, who directs the Super Audio
project for Sony, put it to me. All agreed that SACD was vastly superior. So why
had PCM become the standard for digital sound?
Mr. Kawakami explained that PCM had come about as an
engineering solution to "a bit-management problem." In the early 1980s, Sony
stipulated two requisites for developing digital sound. First, the container
itself, which was the CD disk, could not be more than 4.75 inches in diameter --
a dimension that would allow CD players to meet the European standard for an
audio player on an automobile's dashboard. This meant, given the
state-of-the-art technology then, that the CD could not hold more than 650
million bits of data. Second, it had to be capable of playing at least 70
minutes of music -- the length of a typical symphony -- which required more than
2.5 billion bits of digital data.
To meet these seemingly contradictory requirements, part of
the signal had to be eliminated, but without degrading the sound so much that it
became unacceptable to the public. Enter PCM. This ingenious electronic fiddle
truncated the original bandwidth from 100,000 to 20,000 hertz, since humans
cannot normally hear frequencies above 15,000 hertz, and "sampled," or took a
digital snapshot, of the remaining information 44,000 times a second. This
doctored data was repackaged into 16-bit packets capable of playing back a
symphony in 74 minutes or less.
Of course, the acoustical engineers who invented PCM knew
that the condensed 16-word product would be inferior to the original: For one
thing, filters, on both the encoding and decoding ends, cause audible "errors."
For another, chopping out all the information between 20,000 and 100,000 Hertz
reduced the harmonic depth of the music itself. Still, PCM did provide a highly
convenient means of getting sound, or its approximation, to the masses. Sony,
with its partner Philips, gradually managed to convince enough people that the
PCM CD offered superior sound to LPs and that its aural replication of music was
. . . perfect. They and their licensees have so far sold roughly one billion CD
players and 20 billion CDs.
Some diehard audiophiles refused to settle for the
Procrustean world of PCM. They spent as much as $10,000 and more for
digital-to-analog converters designed to ameliorate the filtering errors in PCM.
But even the most expensive outboard digital gear could not restore the missing
bandwidth. By the mid-1990s, however, digital sound technology had taken a giant
step forward, enabling Sony to exorcise the PCM demon.
The answer was already for sale in every consumer
electronics store in the world: the DVD. Originally developed to store digital
video, the DVD player had a laser which could read marks packed much closer
together than those on an audio CD. As a result, a DVD could store about eight
times as much data as the CD. Indeed, there was more than enough room on a DVD
to directly stream in single bits of a digital record of the sound of a
74-minute symphony, sampled 2.8 million times every second. The difference is
evident when one listens in the Sony studio through earphones to the actual
digital bitstream. With PCM, all that is heard is a hash of hisses. With SACD,
so closely did this digital stream approximate the original that one can
actually hear the music. And since this streaming did not need to be repackaged
into 16-bit words or truncated at all, no digital filtering was used. It
conveyed the entire bandwidth, audible or inaudible, up to 100,000 hertz.
Aside from being closer to the music (see Figure #1), it
was simpler than jerry-rigged PCM and, therefore, cheaper to implement. The
Super Audio project, under Mr. Kawakami's direction, was quickly green-lighted.
By this fall, Sony, once again partners with Philips, plans
to sell SACD players for under $300. They will also be backwardly compatible
with conventional CDs so that consumers can play the CDs they already own. Some
200 SACDs have already been issued.
Being an early adopter, I bought an SACD player as soon as
it was available. But then I discovered my very expensive ($10,000) pre-amp
redigitalized the SACDs into PCM. Aside from this sophisticated circuitry, there
was the problem of the volume control. Like that of many other pre-amps, mine
filtered out all bandwidth over 20,000 hertz. That is because, before the
introduction of SACD, sonic information over 20,000 hertz would be heard as
unintended noise. So I still was not getting the full benefit of SACD.
Surfing the Internet with key words like "audiophile" and
"volume control," I then found in Boise, Idaho, something called a passive
volume attenuator, made by Placette Audio and sold for $1,400. By using several
dozen precision resistors, costing about 300 times as much as a conventional
volume control, the Placette was capable of controlling the volume from the SACD
without filtering out any of its bandwidth.
Once I had hooked up my Placette, I was finally able to
listen to unadulterated PCM-free music. I listened on available SACDs, selling
for about $25 -- everything from jazz and church choirs on the DMP sampler I
bought to classical Bach on an acoustical guitar and a Rupert Brooke poem, read
by "Sex and the City" actress Kim Cattrall (who is Mark Levinson's wife) on Red
Rose Music's sampler.
After two weeks of listening, and comparing CD and SACD
tracks of the same original recording, I can say unequivocally that I have heard
the future, and it is SACD.

Some Really interesting Quotes on CD's and Vinyl Records...
From Stereophile Website
http://www.stereophile.com/asweseeit/is_analog_dead/
Is Analog Dead?
By John Atkinson • June, 1990
1950: "The ultimate in disc recording is to make the reproduced sound as
near as possible to the original..." (The founder of Audio magazine,
C.G. McProud, in "Recording Characteristics," Audio Engineering, January
1950, reprinted in The 2nd Audio Anthology, p.67, Radio Magazines, 1954.)
1951: "One of the important factors in the public acceptance of LP
discs is the fact that they can be played with a total absence of surface
noise..." (Maximilian Weil in "Phono Facts," Audio Engineering, June
1951, reprinted in The 2nd Audio Anthology, p.62, Radio Magazines, 1954.)
1979: "Digital audio recording promises to bring us a level of
fidelity so far above that of both the mechanical disc and the analog tape
recording that it cannot be ignored by anyone seeking the highest possible
fidelity." (Stereophile's founder, J. Gordon Holt, in Stereophile,
Vol.4 No.4, p.3.)
1980: "It has become a mindlessly parroted truism...that digital
recording is the...wave of the future. At the same time, there isn't a single
audiophile-oriented equipment reviewer, record producer or music critic who
finds the treble range of current digital recordings musically natural and
enjoyable." (Iconoclastic audio critic Peter Aczel in The Audio Critic,
Vol.2 No.3, Spring through Fall 1980, p.18.)
1981: "Our feeling...is that [digital] doesn't offer any significant
advantages over the best that analog can do. But we expect that in time
it certainly will." (Recording engineer Gerald Reynolds of Nimbus Records,
who a year or so earlier had produced a 45rpm LP set, Comparisons, where
pianist Bernard Roberts had recorded Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata
direct-to-disc, on a ½" Ampex analog tape recorder using Dolby-A noise
reduction, and via an early Sony PCM-1600 A/D converter. (It is one of life's
delicious ironies that though Nimbus started the 1980s furiously committed to
direct-to-disc and to analog tape, they were one of the first record companies
to stop issuing LPs.) Quoted in HFN/RR, January 1981, p.61.)
1982: "Compact Disc...will not make the analog disc
obsolete...Both systems will coexist for a long time. It is true that, last time
around, the new and compatible microgroove records established themselves very
quickly; but there was not, then, a record player in almost every home..." (Sony's
Roger Lagadec, then with Studer-Revox, in "Digital Audio, the Studer View,"
Studio Sound, March 1982, and reprinted in HFN/RR, May 1982.)
1982: "Most critical listeners...have agreed that there are
certain things unmistakably wrong with the majority of digitally-mastered analog
discs." (J. Gordon Holt in Stereophile, Vol.5 No.7, September 1982,
p.6.)
1982: "Just as Compact Cassette hasn't replaced the LP...CD in the
immediate future will join, rather than replace, analog technology." (Myself
in "Compact Disc, John Atkinson scratches his head," HFN/RR, November
1982.)
1983: "You're looking at the extraordinary new Compact Disc, the music
format of the future." (A Sony UK advertisement in March 1983.)
1983: "It will take 10 years for the CD to replace the LP." (Steven
N. Harris of Tannoy, then Product Manager of Marantz UK, commenting to me on the
British launch of CD in March 1983.)
1983: "I have heard our hi-fi future, and...it is a clattering,
clamorous cacophony." (Sacramento high-end retailer Keith Yates in "Slipped
Discs," Sacramento, May 1983.)
1983: "I have watched with more than casual interest the unprecedented
promotion for the CD. The traditionally noncritical audio magazines in the
United States have been positively drooling over the merits of the CD. This
created a demand for the player months before they even went on sale." (Famed
mastering engineer Doug Sax in "CD:
A Lie Repeated Often Enough Becomes Truth," Stereophile, Vol.6 No.5,
November, 1983.)
1985: "I have not heard a single compact disc that sounds as good as
the identical recording." (Music critic Edward Rothstein in "The Quest for
Perfect Sound," The New Republic, December 30, 1985.)
1986: "Every technological advance in sound reproduction has been
hailed as 'unmusical,' 'unnatural,' and 'contrary to God's law.' The first
stereo discs were castigated by most sonically-aware critics on precisely the
same grounds, except that two new cavil criteria had been added: inner-groove
distortion and mistracking. Could we really have expected CD to be greeted with
any less skepticism. What about giving CD the 28-year chance to prove itself
that we gave the LP?" (J. Gordon Holt in "Give
CD a Chance," Stereophile, Vol.9 No.6, September, 1986, p.5.)
1986: "It will probably be several years before the CD repertoire
catches up with that of the LP phonograph record." (Two widely read
mainstream audio writers, Hans Fantel of The New York Times and Ivan
Berger of Audio, in The New Sound of Stereo, Plume Books, New
American Library, February 1986.)
1988: "The existence of more than 3 billion LPs would suggest that it
will be some time before the flimsy little silver discs entirely obsolete the
LP." (Harry Pearson in answer to a reader's letter in The Absolute Sound,
#52, Spring 1988, p.22.)
1988: "A 16-bit digital system with a sampling frequency of
44.1kHz is of the most heavenly and incontrovertible perfection (barring vulgar
hardware and software foul-ups...)." (Iconoclastic audio critic Peter Aczel
in The Audio Critic, Issue No.11, Winter/Spring 1988, p.35.)
1988: "A properly dithered 16-bit digital audio storage system with
accurate analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters will outperform any
analog storage medium in existence..." (Stanley P. Lipshitz, erstwhile
President of the Audio Engineering Society and, with his associate John
Vanderkooy, one of the acknowledged "Fathers of Digital Dither," in "Are D/A
Converters Getting Worse?," AES Preprint 2586, presented at the March 1988 Paris
AES Convention.)
1989: "149,700,000 Total CD sales for 1988. 72,000,000 Total LP sales
for 1988." ("Broken Records," The San Francisco Examiner, July 9,
1989.)
1989: "We'll...carry turntables as long as they're available...I
believe they'll be available for 10 years." (Wayne Inouye of retail chain The
Good Guys, quoted in that The San Francisco Examiner article.)
1989: "We are living in the Golden Age of the Used LP...the
non-audiophile music lovers of this country are divesting themselves of their LP
collections at a rapid rate. Though this reflects the tragic demise of vinyl as
a viable retail commodity, it's a bonanza for those of us who continue to love
LPs." (Stereophile Publisher Larry Archibald in "Get' em while they're
hot—before they're not," "The Final Word," Stereophile, Vol.12 No.5, p.210.)
1989: "It's a rapidly declining market, but...yes, I could sell more
[LPs]...[The major labels] have cut out so many LPs and the ones they haven't
deleted...often take as much as 3–4 months to come in." (Specialist record
store owner Jim Albright, interviewed by Richard Lehnert in Stereophile,
Vol.12 No.9, p.32. His store, Rare Bear, Santa Fe's last to stock an in-depth LP
catalog, will be selling exclusively cassette and CD by the time you receive
this issue.)
1989: "Stop buying records and start getting CDs." (Stereo Review
Editor-at-Large William Livingstone in "Goodbye LPs, Hello CDs," USA Weekend,
September 29, 1989.)
1990: "Turntables and scraping needles are as out of style as a
Hyundai, the Berlin Wall, junk bonds, Cabbage Patch dolls, and blackened
redfish." (An anonymous writer in "Current Samples," CD Review,
January 1990, p.10.)
1990: "6,500,000 CD players." (The EIA's estimated sales to dealers
of home and portable CD players in 1989, quoted in This Week in Consumer
Electronics, January 15–19, 1990, p.28.)
1990: "CD player sales will still continue to grow at a faster pace
than any other category in the industry." (Sony's director of hi-fi products,
Bob Weissburg, quoted in that TWICE article. (LP turntables were not
listed.)
1990: "Vinyl records...are all but extinct." (Tristram Lozaw in "Is
the CD boom good for sound or just sound business?," The Boston Herald,
March 30, 1990.)
1990: "I sold off my LP collection (about 2500 LPs) five years ago. I
miss many of the records..." (Charles C. White, Jr. in a letter to the
editor, Stereophile, Vol.13 No.5, p.37.)
1990: "Considered as sound, the early CDs were perhaps the biggest
scam in the history of consumer electronics." (Movie critic David Denby in
New York magazine, February 19, 1990, p.38.)
1990: "The record industry has been successful in its pogrom of
destruction of analog..." (Loudspeaker designer and recording engineer David
Wilson, interviewed
elsewhere in this issue of Stereophile.)
1990: "Analog is finished." (A statement made to me by Goldmund's
Michel Reverchon, over an excellent lunch one April 1990 day at Santa Fe's Comme
Chez Vous restaurant, explaining why Goldmund is no longer manufacturing analog
turntables.)
1990: "We are selling the last of our record players...whether we
start up production again [at the end of 1990] depends on the market...we are
hoping to manufacture a CD transport for another company." (Gifted engineer
and turntable manufacturer John Bicht of
Versa Dynamics, in a
telephone conversation with me at the end of April 1990.)
1990: "Unless people walk over records with golf shoes or let their
lava lamps explode on them, vinyl records will virtually always sound better
than a CD." (TAS Senior Popular Music Editor Michael Fremer, quoted in the
Lozaw Boston Herald article.)
1990: "JA, TJN, and I are just back from the recording sessions for
Stereophile's
second LP—if we can get the master successfully transferred to lacquer...the
record will be something to hear." (Larry Archibald in "The Final Word,"
Stereophile, Vol.13 No.3, p.226.)
In response to the question that titles this month's "As We See It" column,
I'll leave it to these objets trouvés to convey what the world thinks the
answer should be. (I assume it's pretty clear how Stereophile sees it.)
While compiling these quotations, however, I find it hard to believe that
almost exactly eight years ago, I sat in on a series of conferences where the
then Managing Director of Sony UK, one Tim Steele, tried to hard-sell skeptical
record-company executives on the benefits of CD to their business. "Who needs
it?" was the overwhelming reaction to that Sony presentation; even in November
of 1982—after the Japanese launch of the medium—a friend of mine who was
a classical label manager at a major classical company was asking my opinion on
the long-term viability of CD. These days, I wished I'd been a little less
positive in my reply!

Separation/IGD=B+*****w/absolute perfect alignment only
Hum=B+
Installation=A
Durability=B+
Score=B+
Price=$57 thru www.amazon.com.
Remarks: Although it does feature super great looks with a chrome-like body that
sports a unique dustbrush...this cart only approaches first rate sound. It may
very well be the most neutral sounding cartridge ever made! The cart certainly
is a great cure for the harsh sound that other brighter units sometimes embrace.
It needs to be pampered a bit with dead accurate "overhang adjustment". This is
necessary for lower inner groove distortion and extracting the special emotion
that lies within the groove walls. A free stylus protractor is available from
www.enjoythemusic.com. Make no mistake though...it is a bargain! It mounts
easily in just about any tonearm you can think of. The Dynamic Stabilizer/brush
renders top rate warp tracking in any tonearm with low bearing friction in both
planes making it suitable for both low mass straight types or medium massed "S"
designs. Mates perfectly well in Rega RB-250, Dual 1200 Series, AR EB and
Pioneer PL-518 tonearms. Might very well be the sleeper in this group!

I myself have an Akai GX-77 reel to reel. (recently bought on eBay - April
2009)

I like it because it's auto reverse and uses metal foil on the tape to auto
reverse at the end of the tape,
The GX-77 has awesome sound and has a dust cover that you can use while
playing tapes.
It's from around 1982 so it's 25+ years old but considered one of the best 7
1/2 inch reel to reel decks out there.
As well it uses famous Akai Glass GX heads which are supposed to last a very
long time compared to other heads.
Time will tell on this issue.
Have to find some chrome tapes as they are supposed to sound awesome.
Specs wise it has very low wow and flutter, decent noise figures and a
frequency repose with the right tape at 7 1/2 inches per second to 33,000 hz.
The transport is also logic controlled and hence much easier on taps.
It also has two banks of heads. one set of 3 for each direction. (6 heads
total)

Smart phones still strong,
despite overall decline in mobile phone sales
First-quarter shipments of
traditional mobile phones fell 37 per cent this year, while smart phone
shipments grew by 33 per cent, according to
IDC Canada
Ltd.’s revised Canadian mobile phone forecast. The results are largely due
to increased shipments of BlackBerry smart phones to the channel.
Overall, mobile phone market
sales to channel partners fell 23 per cent compared to the first quarter last
year. While drops in first-quarter shipments to the channel are typically
related to seasonal factors, IDC notes this year's drop was “especially sharp”
due to the recession.
Weak demand from end users,
higher unemployment and tighter credit conditions are listed as contributing
factors.
IDC Canada predicts an 8.3 per
cent drop in the global mobile phone market this year, but anticipates the smart
phone segment will continue to grow by 3.4 per cent.

some great thoughts from this web site...
In the past six months I have gone from
sceptic to believer, my record collection has already grown to about 100. I
cannot wait to listen to my record player as often as possible...while my
digital player sits neglected; remember this universal player is a
tremendous performer and retails for $3,000 USD. To be honest, I have
developed an aversion for the sterile and uninvolving sound of digital formats
(even hi-rez ones)...I wonder if I will ever get over it.
The past few months has found me feverishly
searching for vinyl, my collection has grown to about 100 LPs. But in my quest
for material to listen to, I have discovered a whole new world of music I never
knew existed. Masterpieces that were recorded on vinyl and seem to have never
made it to a digital format, and may never will. What more, the average price I
have been paying for these treasures is well under $5 USD (used ofcourse).
In the end I dont know how else to express my
new found ecstasy, I am virtually shouting off the top of a mountain. And if you
havent already...get off your duff and go vinyl.
MY THOUGHTS...
YES I AM "HOOKED ON VINYL", it's now one of my mega passions.
A hobby that allows you to collect, listen and tweak. What
could be better.

NJAS Members Comment On 24/96:
"Mike Hobson gave us food for thought in his
talk about the pluses and minuses concerning the two basic types: vinyl and
digital. After hearing what the DVD can do, as demonstrated by Classic Records,
it was sometimes difficult to choose just which format was preferable. Digital
can now be said to be able to compete very favorably with vinyl. And as we have
heard, they do not sound the same. Just which you prefer depends on which format
you feel best presents the essence of the music."
On the other hand there is WAY more selections
of Vinyl compared to SACD / DVD-Audio.

Based on my listening tests MOFI (Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs) LP's / DVD Audio /
SACD / CD's are among the best sounding recordings you can buy. Their value
continues to go up with 25+ year old sealed LP's going for $500.00+. The price
will only go higher as more and more folks re-discover the wonderful warm sound
of vinyl and the fun of collecting something very special which will last for
decades to come. Remember Vinyl lasts for hundreds of years where as optical
formats are expected to have issues after 20 to 30 years.

A BIT ABOUT VINYL RECORDS...
From this web site. ...
http://www.soundstagedirect.com/
VINYL RECORDS
Vinyl records are able to capture the purest quality of
recorded music in true form. This is possible because
the initial recording is captured on an analog source
(usually tape) for the ultimate in High Fidelity sound,
it is then pressed onto virgin vinyl. Analog recordings
capture the bottom end (or bass) while adding sweetness
to the high end (or treble) better than any digital
recording ever could. Analog systems are still commonly
used before they are digitally transferred to CD. This
means that the sound then is altered in the transfer
process when CD's are produced. The word fidelity means
accuracy and faithfulness. High Fidelity sound is
faithful to the original sound made by the artist,
capturing maximum accuracy of what was intended for the
listener to hear. Vinyl records capture those sounds for
the ultimate High Fidelity listening experience!
180/200 GRAM Vinyl LP
These vinyl records are produced with 180 or 200 grams
of high definition premium grade virgin vinyl. This is a
higher quality audiophile pressing than the typical
vinyl record of 100-120 grams. These limited edition
LP's are manufactured with the hi-fi enthusiast in mind.
A 180 or 200 gram LP is sometimes also referred to as an
audiophile pressing, there is a higher bass response and
an even warmer High Fidelity sound. 180 or 200 grams
LP's are typically manufactured in limited amounts and
are considered collectables, commanding a higher price.
VINYL REISSUES
Typically, a vinyl reissue is a repressing of an
original LP, usually extracted from the recording's
master-tapes. In some cases, reissues are re-mastered to
lower surface noise and improve overall sonics. Reissues
help preserve the music of an original recording,
especially when original LPs become unavailable or can
no longer be found. Reissues can be pressed on a variety
of thickness from 150 gram to 200 gram and offer a great
opportunity for records collectors to own many classic

NEXT - THE DEAL OF THE DAY !!!!

Today’s update, The Quest for Quality Sound using Portable Gear,
Oh
ya, it’s ALL about the sound.
So the
latest part of my quest is testing portable CD players. There is a cult of
people out there going goo goo gaa gaa for these 15 to 20 year old little magic wonders. So I
thought hey, for $1.99 to $7.99 a player at value village etc, I can try to get
in on this too. And I thought Vintage Audio meant that we are only talking home
stereo equipment. Time to update my thinking, portable gear is on the list too.
:-). Check out the HEAD-FI website listed above. VERY COOL stuff.
Wow, what a
journey. The world of portable CD players is a really magic place.
Have a
read of this article….

FROM THIS
ARTICLE...
My favourite Discman of this collection without doubt is the Philips AZ6832,
its ability to be smooth one moment, and aggressive the next is highly
impressive, and more akin to a full sized player ~ although I will admit that
this might not be to everyone’s taste.
Wow, Lucky
me, I won the used CD player lottery and picked up a Magnavox / Philips AZ6832 for $1.99 this afternoon (Nov 9,
2009) at Value Village on King George HWY in Surrey B.C. YOU HAVE TO HEAR TH IS
PLAYER... It's truly amazing. Dual 1 bit DAC’s and rich luscious
smooth, not the clinical sound of many other players. Steely Dan has never
sounded better. This unit may not look that great but boy do I get it now about
what early 90's portable CD players can do… Truly AMAZING SOUND on MY SENHEISER
PX100 Headphones. You can’t help but tap your foot… LOL Yuppers digital music can
sound pretty darn good. (A Good MFSL LP still sounds better but what are going to do
if you want to drive somewhere, better break out the portable CD player... )
So what have I learned, well it’s all about those
little magic chips called DAC’s and their headphone amps. (Digital to Analogue Converters)
Who cares
that the batteries only last 3 hours. The sound quality is truly AMAZING....
Maybe that's why the batteries only last a few hours. Turn up the bias on the
transistors and run
those internal op amps a little warmer...to get better sound.

While it says Magnavox it's really a Philips. (I guess it's all
about brands LOL)
It still says AZ6832 not sure what the /17 is all
about though...

Epilogue
My favorite Discman of this collection without doubt is the Philips AZ6832,
its ability to be smooth one moment, and aggressive the next is highly
impressive, and more akin to a full sized player ~ although I will admit that
this might not be to everyone’s taste. If you prefer things slightly smoother,
then there is the D311, it has a very natural sound that seems to compliment the
Eggos perfectly, ‘hand and glove’ is a phrase that springs to mind right now…
The biggest disappointment of all was the D-EJ1000, for a top of the range
player, it is very lacking in the audio department, even if it is by far and
away the most portable unit.

My take on this. Apple didn't do so well in the past with the Apple Newton.
This however will be a success as I belive we will all be reading content from a
device like this in the future. Why well because it makes sense. Think itunes
store but now think text instead of music. It's time to move on to a new format
for books and I am convinced Apple has decided to be a leader in changing the
way we read books, just like they changed the way we deal with music. Stay tuned
should be interesting to watch.
